Pinhook is among many whiskey brands that source liquid from other distilleries, notably MGP in Indiana and Kentucky’s Castle & Key.

However, Pinhook’s Vertical Series of rye whiskey adds an intriguing twist to this practice, offering an annual release that showcases how the whiskey evolves with age.

The latest release, reaching the eight-year-old mark, stands out as a superb rye whiskey crafted for sipping or mixing.

Distinctive Aging Process:

The rye whiskey in the Vertical Series, named Tiz Rye Time, is distilled from MGP’s standard mashbill of 95 percent rye and five percent malted barley.

The journey began with a four-year-old release, providing a baseline for comparison with this new eight-year-old expression. Sampling the two side-by-side reveals notable transformations in flavor and character.

Comparative Tasting Experience:

During a recent Zoom tasting with Pinhook founder and master blender Sean Josephs, participants could compare the expressions of four-year-olds and eight-year-olds.

The four-year-old variant exuded fragrant floral and mint notes, displaying potential for development.

In contrast, the eight-year-old whiskey revealed a deeper flavor profile, featuring dark chocolate, caramel, and plum notes while retaining the rye’s signature spice and a hint of menthol.

Master Blender’s Perspective:

Sean Josephs expressed his satisfaction with the eight-year-old release, noting its richness, intensity, and well-balanced finish. He emphasized the surprise and delight of witnessing the evolution of flavors from the four-year-old to the eight-year-old expression.

Future Releases and Availability:

The Vertical Series Rye, comprising a blend of just 32 barrels bottled at 108.4 proof, will continue to be released annually until it reaches 12 years old, alongside the Bourbon War bourbon Vertical Series.

Pinhook will soon release its flagship Solo Rye, distilled at Castle & Key from a mash bill of 60 percent rye, 20 percent corn, and 20 percent malted barley.

The eagerly anticipated 2024 Vertical Series Rye is slated to hit stores and online.
