Apple announced on Friday that it had removed Meta Platforms’ WhatsApp and Threads from its App Store in China, following an order from the Chinese government citing national security concerns.
Despite the removal of WhatsApp and Threads, other Meta apps such as Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger remained accessible in China’s App Store.
It was not immediately clear how WhatsApp or Threads may have raised security concerns for Chinese authorities.
In response to inquiries, Apple stated, “The Cyberspace Administration of China ordered the removal of these apps from the China storefront based on national security concerns,” emphasizing their obligation to adhere to local laws.
Meta declined to comment on the matter, redirecting queries to Apple. The Cyberspace Administration of China did not respond immediately to requests for comment.
Apple clarified that WhatsApp and Threads remain available for download on its app stores outside of China.
Experts suggested that the government’s action against WhatsApp and Threads could be linked to a new regulation requiring all apps in China to register with the government.
This isn’t the first time Apple has removed apps from its China App Store. Previously, The New York Times news app was taken down for violating local regulations, and last year, ChatGPT-like apps were removed amid regulatory developments in AI services.
The Wall Street Journal initially reported the removal of WhatsApp and Threads from the China App Store.
