Employees at Apple Towson, Maryland, store, represented by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), have voted to authorize a potential strike, IAM announced on Saturday.
While a specific date for the strike has not been determined yet, IAM indicates that concerns regarding work-life balance, irregular scheduling practices, and inadequate wages compared to the region’s living costs are driving factors behind the potential action.
In response to the announcement, an Apple spokeswoman stated that the company intends to engage with the union representing its Towson team respectfully and in good faith, signaling a willingness to address the issues raised by the workers.
The decision to unionize among Apple’s retail workers in Maryland was initiated in June 2022, marking a significant milestone as the first instance of unionization among the tech giant’s retail workforce in the United States.
While the Towson store employees move towards union action, workers at Apple’s Short Hills, New Jersey, store reportedly voted against unionization. According to Bloomberg News, the Communications Workers of America (CWA), which represented the New Jersey workers, attributed the defeat to alleged illegal union-busting tactics by Apple.
CWA had filed complaints with the National Labour Relations Board (NLRB) concerning Apple’s conduct at the New Jersey store and others. John Nagy, an operations lead at the Short Hills store, confirmed the unionization efforts and attributed the outcome to the company’s behavior.
Apple has not commented on the vote against unionization in New Jersey, while CWA and the NLRB have yet to respond to requests for comment on the Bloomberg report detailing the workers’ vote.
