Toyota, Japan’s largest automaker, experienced a significant drop in global production in June 2023, marking the fifth consecutive month of decline.

The company’s output fell by 12.9% to 795,862 vehicles, the steepest drop since December 2022. Various factors, including a certification scandal in Japan and intense competition in China, drove this decline.

Toyota Decline Impact in Japan:

In its home market of Japan, Toyota’s production plunged 18.8%. This was largely due to a scandal involving irregularities in vehicle certification applications, which the transport ministry uncovered. The scandal affected Toyota and other automakers, leading to a broader auto safety issue.

Toyota’s production in China, a critical market for global automakers, fell 21.7%. This decline marks the fifth consecutive month in which Toyota’s output has dropped by 20% or more in the country.

The Chinese market has become increasingly competitive, with domestic electric vehicle (EV) makers like BYD gaining market share and engaging in aggressive price cuts.

Toyota Production in Other Regions:

In North America, Toyota’s production fell by 6.2%, while in Europe, it dropped by 6.6%. These declines were partly due to fewer production days than the previous year.

Toyota’s global sales also suffered, falling by 5.1% in June. The decline was particularly pronounced in Japan and China. Despite these challenges, the company has seen robust demand for hybrid vehicles in the United States.

Financial Outlook:

Despite the downturn in production and sales, Toyota is expected to report strong financial results for the first quarter. Analysts predict a 21% increase in operating profit from the previous year, reaching 1.35 trillion yen ($8.7 billion). A weaker yen and strong demand for hybrid vehicles support this forecast.

For the first six months of 2023, Toyota’s global production fell by 5%, while worldwide sales dipped by 0.9%. These figures include the luxury Lexus brand, reflecting challenges across Toyota’s product lineup.
