At the WWDC 2024, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, confirmed the upcoming integration of OpenAI’s ChatGPT into Apple devices.
This integration aims to enhance the functionality of Apple’s virtual assistant, Siri, by enabling it to gather context and provide more relevant outputs. Siri can also cross-reference information from different apps for more personalized user interactions.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with Apple. He tweeted, “Very happy to be partnering with Apple to integrate ChatGPT into their devices later this year! Think you will like it.” This indicates a positive outlook towards the
collaboration and its potential benefits for users.
Apple has confirmed that ChatGPT will be accessible to users for free without creating an account. The company emphasized that user requests and information will not be logged, ensuring user privacy.
Additionally, paid users of ChatGPT will be able to link their accounts to access premium features on Apple devices.
Elon Musk criticized the OpenAI-Apple partnership, expressing concerns over security and privacy. He tweeted, “It’s absurd that Apple isn’t smart enough to make their own AI, yet is somehow capable of ensuring that OpenAI will protect your security & privacy!” Musk’s remarks reflect his skepticism about the collaboration.
A note added under Musk’s post on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter) clarified that Apple has developed its own AI called Apple Intelligence and that ChatGPT will be integrated specifically with Siri and Apple’s Writing Tools.
