Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang praised Ilya Sutskever, co-founder of OpenAI, for his tremendous contributions to artificial intelligence.

During a commencement address at the California Institute of Technology, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang lauded Ilya Sutskever, cofounder of OpenAI, for his significant contributions to artificial intelligence.

Sutskever, who recently left OpenAI after an attempt to oust CEO Sam Altman, was recognized alongside two other notable computer scientists for their groundbreaking work on a convolutional neural network (CNN) called AlexNet.

The Legacy of AlexNet:

Huang specifically highlighted the contributions of Geoffrey Hinton, Alex Krizhevsky, and Ilya Sutskever in developing AlexNet.

This neural network, which relied heavily on Nvidia’s graphics processing units (GPUs), was designed to recognize over a million high-resolution images. Krizhevsky, Hinton, and Sutskever’s 2012 research paper on AlexNet marked a pivotal moment in the field of computer vision and deep learning.

“Geoff Hinton, Alex Krizhevsky, and Ilya Sutskever used Nvidia CUDA GPUs to train AlexNet and shocked the computer vision community by winning the 2012 ImageNet challenge.

This was the big moment, the big bang of deep learning. A pivotal moment that marked the beginning of the AI revolution,” said Jensen Huang.

Contributions to OpenAI and Beyond:

Following his work on AlexNet, Sutskever co-founded OpenAI with Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and a team of researchers.

His tenure at OpenAI concluded in May this year, six months after a failed attempt by him and other board members to remove Sam Altman from the CEO position.

New Venture: Super Safeintelligence Inc:

Currently, Sutskever is embarking on a new venture in artificial intelligence.

He has founded Super Safeintelligence Inc., a research lab dedicated to developing safe superintelligence. The lab has a clear mission and singular focus: ensuring the safety of advanced AI systems.
