Mark Zuckerberg recently shared his perspective on the direction of artificial intelligence development, contrasting Meta’s approach with that of competitors like Google and OpenAI. He criticized the notion of creating a singular, all-encompassing AI, which he called “creating God,” and emphasized Meta’s focus on developing multiple AI tools tailored to users’ diverse needs.
“I find it a pretty big turnoff when people in the tech industry talk about building this one true AI,” Zuckerberg said in an interview with YouTuber Kane Kallaway. “It’s almost as if they think they’re creating God. And it’s like, that’s not what we’re doing.”
Zuckerberg cited examples like Google’s Gemini AI and OpenAI’s ChatGPT to illustrate his point. He highlighted that, unlike these companies, Meta is focused on creating a variety of AI tools for different purposes. Despite this, Meta’s AI assistant will remain available as part of its offerings.
“Our overall view is that this isn’t the type of thing that there should just be one of,” he said. “People want to interact with lots of different people and businesses, and there needs to be a lot of different AIs created to reflect people’s different interests.”
Meta is developing Llama 3, an open-source large language model (LLM). This model will allow developers, researchers, and businesses to use it as a foundation to build AI tools, promoting a diverse ecosystem of AI applications.
Zuckerberg is optimistic about AI’s impact on employment and creativity. He believes AI won’t steal jobs or hinder creativity but will enhance productivity, especially for creators like social media influencers. He emphasized the importance of maintaining an open mind and continuously learning and upgrading skills.
