Nirupesh Joshi and Mercy Amalraj, creators of Bangalore Watch Company (BWC), are a dynamic duo who transitioned from thriving careers in IT consulting in Hong Kong to returning to India to revive the art of watchmaking.

BWC, a rising name in the watchmaking industry, is on a mission to create timepieces that embody contemporary Indian narratives. The closure of HMT, India’s iconic watch manufacturer known for producing the country’s first mechanical watch, left a void in the market. BWC aims to fill this gap by introducing innovative mechanical watches that resonate with the modern Indian ethos.

A New Perspective on Indian Timepieces

In a conversation with BWC’s co-founder, Joshi, he expressed the brand’s unique vision: “Our mission is to create collections of watches that tell stories with a 21st-century worldview of India—a vibrant country with advancements in science, technology, space, and defense, as opposed to the dated, mainstream view.” This fresh perspective drives BWC to design watches that go beyond mere functionality, capturing the essence of India’s dynamic progress.

Aviation-Inspired Collections

BWC’s collections are thoughtfully curated around themes such as sports, aviation, and space. When asked about the decision to start with a pilot’s watch, diverging from the conventional approach of first launching a classic model, Joshi explained, “I have a strong passion for aviation. Therefore, we sought to draw inspiration from the Indian Air Force for our pilot watch collection. This collection serves as a tribute to India’s first supersonic fighter jet, the MiG 21.” This passion for aviation is reflected in BWC’s dedication to creating watches that honor India’s rich history in aerospace and defense.

Introducing the Mach 1 Avalanche

BWC’s latest release, the Mach 1 Avalanche, is an aviation-themed watch that pays tribute to the brave pilots who navigate the challenging skies above the Himalayan peaks. The Himalayan range, with over 1,300 peaks rising above 6,000 meters, presents formidable challenges and opportunities for the Indian Air Force (IAF).

A significant portion of these peaks lies within Indian airspace, underscoring the strategic importance of this region.

The Mach 1 Avalanche serves as a homage to the IAF’s critical role in safeguarding India’s airspace and ensuring the safety and operational effectiveness of border forces stationed in these high-altitude environments.

The IAF’s responsibilities extend beyond national security, encompassing the well-being and sustenance of personnel deployed in these rugged terrains, where extreme environmental conditions and logistical challenges are the norm.
